Ground handling competition at Warsaw airport

Swissport International and Menzies Aviation will start operating at Warsaw airport becoming the first real competition for two Polish ground service companies currently working at the airport. LS Services is owned by LOT Polish Airlines and Warsaw Airport Services are owned by PPL, the airport's operator. Earlier this year another luggage and ground handling company LOT Ground Services went bankrupt and its assets were leased out to the new company - LS Services.

After merging their operations in Poland to be more competitive, Swissport and Menzies are expected to start working in Warsaw in 2010, according to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. They also operate jointy at Madrid's Barajas airports. Both companies have been operating at several European airports and together they employ about 46 thousand people. It is highly likely new players on the Warsaw airport will take away from WAS and LS Service some of their customers they serve at other airports, such as Swiss, Easy Jet or Lufthansa Cargo.
